Grain sparks strong cargo volumes at Port of Thunder Bay

May was an active month in the Port of Thunder Bay. The Port experienced strong performance in grain shipments, achieving cargo volume just short of 930,000 metric tons (MT). This figure is the second highest monthly grain tonnage in the last two years. The May 2024 performance also boosted the year-to-date total cargo to 2.7 million tons from the year-earlier 2.1 million tons.

Potash shipments continue to exhibit exceptional strength. Continuing a record-setting trend that commenced early last summer, May’s potash volume reached nearly 260,000 MT. Similar to grain, this marks the second highest monthly volume for the commodity in the past two seasons.

Other notable cargo movements in May included the arrival of steel pipes at Keefer Terminal and a shipment of petroleum, the latter being the second liquid bulk import of the season. This return in liquid bulk imports, after an absence last season, signifies a continued positive shift in the Port’s cargo diversity.

Overall, May was a bustling month for the Port of Thunder Bay, with a total of 58 vessels in port, surpassing last season’s monthly high of 56 ships recorded in December. Notably, approximately one-third of these vessels were ocean-going ships.
