The Association of Canadian Port Authorities (ACPA) honoured Fritz King, the former Managing Director of Atlantic Container Line Canada (ACL), with the prestigious ACPA Medal of Merit Award at the association’s annual conference in Halifax.
The Medal of Merit recognizes outstanding works or service on a national platform by an individual (or individuals), institution, or organization in the port, shipping or maritime fields. ACPA has bestowed this recognition since 1975.
Fulvio Fracassi, President and CEO of the Halifax Port Authority, and Ian Hamilton, Chair of the Association of Canadian Port Authorities and, President and CEO of the Hamilton-Oshawa Port Authority, presented the award to Fritz King.
“On behalf of the Halifax Port Authority, I want to extend our warm congratulations to Fritz King on receiving the Medal of Merit,” said Fulvio Fracassi, President and CEO of the Halifax Port Authority. “His longstanding service in the Halifax marine community, and his respected contributions to the maritime industry have left an enduring legacy.”
Born and raised in Nova Scotia, Mr. King’s lengthy career includes an incredible 53 years with ACL. Among his many external roles he was a founding member of the Halifax Employers Association and Chair of that Board for 14 years, additionally spending 10 years on the ILA Pension and Welfare Board and the Audit Committee.
Upon the introduction of port Marine Service Fees, he was appointed by the province to sit on the Canadian Coast Guard’s National Marine Advisory Board and acted as Industry Chair for the Maritime provinces Maritime Seacoast Advisory Board for several years thereafter. He is also proud to have served 19 years on the Shipping Federation of Canada’s National Board.
Fritz King’s commitment to the betterment of the shipping industry is exemplary. In its nomination of Fritz, the Halifax Port Authority cited his vast knowledge of marine transportation, his work ethic and his problem-solving skills. “We are grateful for his thoughtful and inspiring leadership and dedication to our industry throughout his career,” added Fracassi.
“I am deeply honoured to have received this award,” said King. “I have spent my entire career in the shipping industry exclusively with ACL in postings across Canada as well as serving in many other assignments throughout the organizational network. Now retired and reflecting on my career, I feel my 20 plus years in Halifax as Managing Director for ACL Canada were, in many ways, the most rewarding. Working within the ACL family, with clients, service providers, industry support groups, and liaising with the partner ports where our vessels call has led to lifelong friendships and unique opportunities. Thank you to ACPA for this truly unexpected recognition.”
