The 32 employees of Montreal Gateway Terminals launched an indefinite general strike early this Monday morning. They had filed a strike notice last Thursday after voting 96% in favour of strike action on September 11.
In the event of a walkout, the container terminal operator indicated mitigation measures would be put in place. With the exception of certain schedule adjustments, operations should continue as normal.
“Discussions are stumbling over subcontracting and wage issues. In addition, there is no agreement on the minimum operational requirements for the terminal to run smoothly. This company is very profitable, thanks to our members. Employees deserve better! ” said Loïc Blanchard, CUPE union representative.
Mediation and conciliation have been tried in this case, but without success. The previous collective agreement expired on December 31, 2024.
With 143,000 members in Quebec, CUPE (Canadian Union of Public Employees) represents the Syndicat des débardeurs du port de Montréal as well as the longshoremen of the ports of Quebec City, Trois-Rivières, Sorel and Matane, for a total of about 1600 members
The strike is not affecting other terminals, noted the Montreal Port Authority, which added that “the MPA continues to work closely with its terminals and all partners to maintain the level of efficiency and fluidity expected by our customers.”
