Joint venture partners Arcadis (EURONEXT: ARCAD) and Egis have been appointed by DP World as the Operator’s Engineer for the development of the Contrecœur Container Terminal Project at the Port of Montréal. The landmark infrastructure project is set to transform Canada’s eastern trade gateway and expand the Port of Montréal’s annual capacity by 60 per cent. Through the joint venture, the team will design and engineer the terminal infrastructure required for the new facility to operate, which includes all buildings, the container yard, rail yard, utilities, and truck gates.
“The Contrecœur Container Terminal is an exciting project, marking a major investment in Canada’s trade infrastructure and an important step in expanding capacity at one of the country’s key trade gateways,” said Kevin Karaloff, Business Unit Leader, Ports and Marine, Arcadis.”This project will help strengthen supply chains, improve connectivity, and support long-term economic growth well beyond the Port of Montréal. We’re proud to continue our relationship with DP World in Canada, bringing together our global port and marine experience with local engineering expertise to help deliver this landmark project.”
“The Contrecœur Container Terminal sits at the intersection of two strategic priorities for Egis: serving our key international clients and supporting the development of critical infrastructure in Canada’s fastest-growing markets.” said Jean Steenhouwer, Chief Commercial Officer, Egis in Americas. “Working alongside DP World, the Port of Montréal and our partners, we are proud to contribute to a landmark project that will reshape Canada’s eastern trade gateway, strengthen national supply chains and deliver long-term value for the Canadian economy.”
Arcadis will lead the environmental assessment, geotechnical engineering, electrical engineering, rail infrastructure, and design of the container terminal’s primary operational and administrative buildings. Egis will lead the design and engineering of the terminal’s utility buildings, civil utilities, crane rails, pavements, and truck gate infrastructure. Moffatt & Nichol, acting as a subconsultant to the joint venture, will provide terminal planning and operational specifications services to determine the terminal’s layout and optimize terminal operations.
According to the Government of Canada, this flagship, nation-building project will support approximately 4,000 jobs annually during construction and generate an estimated $750 million in annual economic benefits once operational, strengthening supply chain resilience across Canada. In alignment with the Major Projects Office designation of the project as a project of national interest, the federal government has committed $1.16 billion in funding through the Canada Infrastructure Bank.
The announcement expands on work Egis and Arcadis are already completing for the Montréal Port Authority and DP World. Both organizations bring experience fulfilling leadership roles in the planning, design, and engineering of marine and landside port infrastructure locally and globally through current and completed projects such as the Port of Calais in France, Contrecoeur Terminal Expansion Marine Works, and the Westport Program in Australia.
The award of the land-based work follows the start of marine infrastructure construction, which is being managed by the Montréal Port Authority and began in April 2026. The Contrecœur Container Terminal is slated for completion in 2030.
