MSC surges to 20% market share in global container capacity

According to the latest report from Alphaliner, MSC’s container fleet now represents 20% of global capacity at just under 6 million TEUs.

MSC’s fleet stands at 837 ships of 5.98 million TEUs, putting the Swiss-based carrier “one big ship delivery” away from hitting the 6 million TEU mark. The fleet includes 539 owned ships of nearly 3 million TEUs.

In the past few years, MSC has expanded more quickly than its peers – notably allowing it to surpass Maersk as the biggest liner operator in 2022. Maersk’s market share today amounts to 14.5% with capacity of 4.4 million TEUs while France’s CMC CGM Group places third with a 12.5% share at 3.7 million TEUs.

With an orderbook of 99 vessels of 1.19 million TEUs, MSC’s fleet is poised to grow to above 7 million TEUs within several years.
