Just released statistics confirm a present downward trend of containerized cargo at the Port of Halifax, with Q2 2023 throughput of 137,774 TEUs representing a decline of 12% from a year earlier.
“It’s the result of overall weakness in the global economy and is consistent with what is happening with ports and supply chains across North America,” commented Lane Farguson, Marketing and Communications Director of the Halifax Port Authority.
Containerized imports fell by 17% while exports decreased by 5.5%. However, non-containerized tonnage in Q2 2023 amounted to 168,517 metric tonnes – a major increase.
Total cargo tonnage through HPA and non-HPA facilities in Q2 2023 attained 2.62 million metric tonnes, representing a 0.5% increase.
