Study highlights Port of Nanaimo’s growing contribution to jobs, trade and economic growth

A new independent Economic Impact Study confirms the Port of Nanaimo is a significant economic driver for Canada, British Columbia and Vancouver Island, generating $2.4 billion in economic output in 2025. The study, conducted by Deetken Insight, assessed the economic impacts of the Port and its port community using recognized Statistics Canada data and economic modelling.

The assessment found that activities connected to the Port supported 8,073 jobs, generated $1.1 billion in GDP, contributed $557 million in wages, and produced approximately $115 million in tax revenues for federal, provincial and municipal governments.

“This study confirms what our partners, tenants and community see every day: the Port of Nanaimo is more than a place where goods move. It is a connector of people, businesses and opportunity,” said Ian Marr, President and CEO, Nanaimo Port Authority. “The Port supports local jobs, strengthens Vancouver Island’s access to domestic and international markets, and contributes to a stronger regional economy.”

The findings also demonstrate significant growth since the Port’s previous economic impact assessment in 2014. After adjusting for inflation, total economic output and GDP increased by approximately 50 per cent, with gains across all key indicators, including employment and wages.

As Vancouver Island’s largest gateway for marine trade, the Port plays a critical role in connecting Island businesses to domestic and international markets. The study highlights the importance of marine transportation infrastructure in supporting trade, economic diversification and supply chain resilience for a region without a fixed link to the mainland.

The report also points to continued investment in the Port’s future. In 2025, approximately $7 million was invested in capital projects on port lands. In partnership with DP World, the Nanaimo Port Authority is advancing the expansion of Duke Point Terminal, a project to increase capacity, improve efficiency and support growth in container and short-sea shipping. The project includes approximately $133 million in planned investment through 2028 and is estimated to generate $232 million in economic output, $108 million in GDP, 734 jobs and $54 million in labour income.
