Vancouver – SAAM Towage has obtained the international Underwater Radiated Noise (URN) certification for its electric tugboat CDG, which operates in Canada.
The certification, granted by Lloyd’s Register, confirms compliance with stringent standards to reduce underwater radiated noise, validating the vessel’s lower acoustic impact and its contribution to protecting the marine ecosystem, particularly marine mammals inhabiting coastal waters.
SAAM Towage Canada Country Manager, Sander Bikkers, said: “We are committed to operating in an increasingly sustainable and innovative way, aligned with the challenges of the communities where we operate. Reducing the acoustic impact of our operations is a tangible contribution to protecting the underwater ecosystem and reinforces our vision of responsible growth.”
The CDF was built by Sanmar Shipyards and designed by the Canadian firm Robert Allan Ltd. The 23.4-meter-long, 12-meter-wide vessel is part of the new generation of ElectRA 2300SX tugboats, which, when operating at full capacity, can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 2,400 tonnes per year.
