The National Maritime Group (NMG) welcomes the government’s introduction of legislation that strengthens Canada’s key competitive frameworks and addresses critical elements of the country’s supply chains. Representing over 100 members that move most of Canada’s international cargo, NMG has advocated for measures that strengthen supply chain reliability and support Canada’s broader efforts to double trade, attract investment and build Canada strong.
“The government has listened to the concerns of Canadian port operators and industry voices and proposed measures in Bill C-39, the Building Canada Strong Act, to address factors that affect Canadian economic resilience, reliability and trade diversification, including labour disruption, security, digitalization, and port governance and financial flexibility”, says Debbie Murray, President and CEO, the National Maritime Group.
“Several important elements are addressed in the bill in a manner that signals that this government is willing to make the changes needed to ensure that Canada can deliver to international partners and its citizens while protecting critical labour rights,” says Ms. Murray.
West Coast ports dimension
“The inclusion of the Industrial Inquiry Commission on West Coast Ports recommendations for geographical certification and a Special Mediator are amongst mechanisms that will preserve labour rights, clarify the established bargaining process and help avoid unnecessary disruptions,” Ms. Murray said, adding: “NMG believes that further amendments, including to the 10 days of paid medical leave provisions added during COVID, would offer additional labour availability and reliability to Canada’s supply chains and the longshoring industry.
“We look forward to working with government through the parliamentary process to ensure that this important legislation delivers for Canada.”
