This summer 2025 edition of Maritime Magazine has substantial topical content of interest to Canadian shippers, transportation providers and government policymakers as many stakeholders strive to navigate through the complexity of geopolitical conflicts and the ever-moving goalposts of the Trump tariff warfare.
Within the above context, as the federal government prepares or launches initiatives to lessen Canada’s heavy reliance on the U.S. economy and diversify trade relations, highly appropriate is our annual feature on Indo-Pacific market opportunities. Written by West Coast correspondent Colin Laughlan, it includes informative interviews with some key government and industry officials.
Our second feature is our annual overview of cargo and infrastructure developments at Canadian ports on the east and west coast coasts and the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence maritime corridor. Much happening, with the major ports in Ontario most affected by the upheaval in the auto industry caused by the Trump steel and automobile tariffs.
Of special interest, too, and in a more optimistic vein, is the First Watch Editor’s column on the significant progress being made to surround the world’s oceans with more marine protected areas via a High Seas Treaty crafted by the United Nations. This offered the occasion to single out a remarkable recent documentary launched by Sir David Attenborough, the legendary British broadcaster-biologist, at the age of 99!
