Crews working under the Unified Command are preparing to use small explosives to remove on Saturday evening the portion of the collapsed bridge that is laying across the bow of the Dali containership, known as span four.
Precision cuts made with small, strategically-placed charges offers the “safest and swiftest method” to remove the bridge piece and refloat the ship, the Unified Command said. “This is an industry-standard tool in controlled demolition that will break the span into smaller pieces, which will allow the work of refloating the vessel and removing it from the federal channel.”
The containership struck the Francis Scott Bridge on March 26, resulting in six fatal casualties among workers on the bridge.
