Canadian railways to help Ukraine restore railway infrastructure

Canada will lend a hand in rebuilding Ukraine’s railway system, confirmed the Ukraine  Ministry of Infrastructure in a report published by the Kviv Post.

Six thousand kilometres of railway tracks have been wrecked (or Ukraine has lost control of them) since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion, along with fifty bridges and dozens of railroad stations that have failed to operate.

“Together with our Canadian partners, we agreed on creating a joint working group, where we will define priority cooperation projects together,” said Oleksandr Kubrakov, Ukraine’s Minister of Infrastructure. “We expect that in the near future we will start working on specific projects and start implementing them.”

A joint working committee will be established by Ukraine and Canada to find initiatives for collaboration. They anticipate beginning their installation soon.

Particularly, the Canadian Pacific Railway Company (CP) and the Canadian National Railway (CN) will offer Ukrzaliznytsia expert assistance in issues of railway management, logistics development, and infrastructure reconstruction.

The arrangement was made during a meeting last week at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)’s 41st Assembly in Montreal

“As a key ally and partner to the Ukrainian reconstruction efforts, the Government of Canada will leverage broader industry and supply chain partnerships that can help inform decisions on freight commodity movements by rail,” said Canadian Transport Minister Omar Alghabra.
