After five days of what was described as intense negotiations, the longshore union at the Port of Montreal , CUPE 375, and the Maritime Employers Association (MEA) today announced a resumption of their talks for July 13 with a view to concluding a new collective agreement replacing the one that expired on December 31, 2018.

Last week, the union representing some 1,100 longshoremen staged a 40-hour strike on July 2 targeted at the two container terminals of Montreal Gateway Terminals Partnership, biggest container terminal operator at Canada’s second largest port in what was widely interpreted as a pressure tactic in the prolonged waterfront negotiations. Key unresolved issues are reported to be revolving around working conditions and scheduling.
