World’s “largest” containership launched in China

Hudong Zhonghua shipyard, owned by China State Shipbuilding Company (CSSC) has announced the launch of what is claimed to be the world’s largest containership based on capacity. The MSC Tessa, has a capacity of 24,116 TEUs.

The mega-containership was floated out of its building dock at the Hudong Zhonghua Shipbuilding’s Changxing Shipbuilding Base, located on Shanghai’s Changxing Island, on August 1.

Upon completion, the MSC Tessa will surpass Evergreen’s Ever Alot by 112 TEU to reportedly rank as the world’s largest containership. Delivery is slated for later this year.

With a deck area the equivalent of four football fields, the MSC Tessa measures  399.99 meters long with a beam of 61.5 meters.  Three other ultra-large containerships are on order at Hudong Zhonghua for Mediterranean Shipping Company, the world’s largest container shipping operator.
