North America’s leading iron ore gateway, the Port of Sept-Îles on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River, reported today it has kicked off 2025 with a record number of ships in the Bay of Sept-Iles at the same time. On average, the large bulk vessels transporting the Labrador Trough’s high-quality iron ore to overseas markets spend two weeks in the port’s harbour.
“Currently, 16 ships are navigating our waters, including 2 at dock and 14 at anchor,” indicated the port’s Communications Manager, Frédérick J. Tétreault. “Among them, 8 ships from 2024 are waiting to be loaded, while the others are new arrivals for 2025.”
“This activity is a testament to the Port’s vitality and marks the beginning of a promising year with a strong volume of maritime traffic on the horizon.”
In 2023, the Port of Sept-Îles handled a record 36.6 million metric tons and final figures for 2024 were expected to approach 40 million tons.
