Gigantic crane collapses on board offshore installation ship (video)

A few people were slightly injured on Saturday in an accident on a ship under construction for the dredging company DEME in Rostock, Germany, the company announced on Saturday evening in a press release. “A serious accident occurred aboard the offshore installation vessel ‘Orion 1’ during crane loading tests, “explains DEME. The vessel, built in China, is owned by COSCO (Qidong) Offshore Co and is currently alongside the Liebherr production workshops in Rostock where the 5,000 t Liebherr HLC 295000 crane was installed and was undergoing various tests.

The ship was scheduled to be delivered to DEME in the second half of May, the company continues. The crane suffered significant damage, according to the company. The exact extent of these as well as the damage to the ship itself will have to be assessed in the coming days and weeks. By watching the video of the accident HERE, it becomes clear that the damage is substantial. Five people were slightly injured, according to police in the Baltic port city. Two of them had to be treated in hospital. About 120 people were on board the vessel at the time of the accident.

Upon delivery, Orion was scheduled to travel to Scotland to begin installing sheath foundations on the 950 MW Moray East offshore wind farm. Photos: Liebherr
