Port of Thunder Bay experiencing “generational” cargo records

The Port of Thunder Bay has reported continued strength in shipping activity with just over one month remaining in the navigation season. The port has handled modern record volumes of key cargoes this season including potash and phosphate fertilizer, as shown by volumes to end November.

The year-to-date overall total amounted to 9.2 million metric tons versus 8.1 million tons. Potash totalled 1.68 million tons and grain 6.8 million tons.

The fertilizer, handled inbound at Keefer Terminal, has contributed to Keefer recording its strongest annual cargo volume in decades.

There was a significant rise in potash volumes shipped from the port’s dry bulk terminals, nearly doubling in tonnage from the same month last year. The port has not reported potash numbers this high in 40 years.

Port grain volumes held strong in the month of November, following significant gains in September and October. The year-to-date grain volume exceeds the five-year average by over 500,000 metric tons.
