Port of Sept-Îles achieves biggest cargo volume in 40 years

The Port of Sept-Îles today announced, already before the end of the year, that  its cargo throughput attained 30 million tonnes in early December. One has to go back to the golden era of the regional iron ore industry, in the late 1970s, to find such a high level of shipments which then classified Sept-Îles as the second largest Canadian port in tonnage terms.

It is on board the C. Vision bulker operated by Minerai de Fer Québec that the symbolic 30 millionth tonne will be departing for China in an ocean voyage of more than 45 days.

The port authority commented that this milestone was all the more significant since it coincided with a period of global pandemic during which it was so essential to show resilience and maintain economic activity linked to commercial trade with the rest of the world.

Pierre D. Gagnon, President and CEO, saluted the contribution of all individuals working in the mining and iron sectors, at Aluminerie Alouette, port installations and the many factories and small enterprises in the region. (photo SIPA)
