According to Project44, an Advanced Visibility Platform ™, more than 1.9 million TEUs of capacity currently on the water are heading to congested ports around the world due to the dislodging of the Ever Given.
As a result of the Ever Given grounding in the Suez Canal at the end of March, up to 400 ships, many of them container ships, heading both north and south have been delayed by the blockage and are now arriving at their destination at similar times, in ports that were already congested.
In major ports like Singapore, more than 370,000 TEUs of capacity are en route to the port, where 83 vessels representing 299,310 TEUs were already in port or anchored and awaiting disembarkation by April 12.
The situation is similar in Rotterdam, where 15 ships representing 196,600 TEUs will arrive next week, lining up behind 85 ships already in port or waiting to enter the port.
Other major ports bracing for the volume surge are New York, with 76,500 TEUs either arriving or still from the Suez Canal incident; Port Kelang, at 103,900 TEUs; and Jebel Ali, at 75,879 TEUs.
Project44’s ongoing post-incident analysis provides shipping industry stakeholders with a better understanding of the incident, providing the analytical tools to create more robust supply chains in the future.
“The Suez Canal incident brings out the message that shippers need to be prepared for unexpected disruptions to their supply chain. With real-time visibility and advanced alerting capabilities, disruptions and the ability to implement strategies to avoid them are more manageable than ever. ”—Josh Brazil VP Marketing project44
