Enjoy! The Spring Edition of Maritime Magazine (No. 116) is online

This spring 2025 issue of Maritime Magazine has content of exceptional topical interest to Canadian shippers, transportation providers and government policymakers – published shortly after the April 28 federal election and coinciding with the global turbulence caused by President Trump’s trade war.

As has become an annual tradition, there is an in-depth feature on the strategic U.S. Midwest market, which offers significant cargo opportunities for Canadian ports, railways and trucking firms. It is written by veteran transportation journalist Brent Frederick, who has interviewed government officials, economists and industry stakeholders in Canada and the Midwest.

Our second feature focuses on the growing number of green shipping corridors emerging in the world and in Canada to advance decarbonization. It is written by our “green” transportation specialist Julie Gedeon.

Of special interest, too, is the First Watch column by Editor Leo Ryan on the second massive trade war front launched by President Trump – steep levies on owners of Chinese-built ships calling at U.S. ports following a first recent broadside of punitive tariffs on all countries. In a late development, there was, at least, some consolation for Canadian and other Great Lakes carriers who were given an exemption in a revised fee structure – a victory for economically-feasible shortsea shipping and the protection of a vital regional supply chain in North America.
