In its latest update, the Canadian Coast Guard reports that dismantling has begun of the wrecked containership MSC Baltic lll grounded since February 15, 2025 in a remove cove off the west coast of Newfoundland after losing power.
As of July 16, 471 of the 472 cargo containers onboard the MSC Baltic III have been removed from the vessel, the CGC reported. “Due to its damaged condition, one container will stay on the wreck until it is pulled on shore.”
Crews from salvage company Resolve Marine have begun removing sections of the accommodations block.
The water treatment system is now installed and going through testing. Once in operation, it will treat the contaminated water found in the cargo holds.
“Daily shoreline monitoring continues when it is safe to do so. We continue to see limited quantities of tar balls. These are cleaned as found,” the CCG indicated.
Due to a significant increase in operational activity in the area, the Canadian Coast Guard strongly advises the public to stay away from the MSC Baltic III work site. “To ensure the safety of all personnel and the public, we ask that individuals respect all restrictions and follow the directions and guidance provided by local authorities and response teams. We appreciate the public’s ongoing cooperation throughout the wreck removal phase.”
The pace of work has increased since Resolve Marine was appointed this spring to focus on the second phase of the effort – the removal and remediation at the wreck site. They are also seeking to get as much of the salvage completed as possible in the summer season. The goal is to get a large portion of the work completed before the winter weather arrives.
