China State Shipbuilding Corporation unveils design of record mega-containership of 27,500 TEU

During the giant SMM Hamburg Maritime Exhibition which concludes today,  China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) drew much attention by unveiling the design of what would constitute the world’s largest containership: the GREEN SEALION 27500 with a capacity of 27,500 TEU. If built, it would be 3,000 TEU bigger in capacity than existing 24,346 TEU vessels in the fleet of Mediterranean Shipping Company.

The ultra-large ship, which received its Approval in Principle (AiP) certificate from the DNV classification society, is a dual-fuel vessel powered by LNG,and sets  a benchmark for environment-friendly marine transport. Its features include a highly optimized hull design to enhance fuel efficiency. It also can achieve zero emissions while docked through its integration with shore power systems.

The 31st edition of SMM notably focused on the maritime energy transition and the digital transformation. More than 2,000 international exhibitors from 70 nations filled the 12 exhibition halls.
