UK Chamber of Shipping to host maritime G7 event

The UK Chamber of Shipping has announced plans for a global online meeting with an agenda which will address trade barriers and improving collaboration on green R&D initiatives.

The ‘M7’ meeting will ‘match’ the invitation lists for the G7 meeting which will take place in the UK later this year. Representatives from the UK, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, South Africa, South Korea and the United States will join the new event, scheduled for 9 June.

Launching the initiative, UK Chamber of Shipping President John Denholm said: ‘Shipping is vital for international trade and as we emerge from the Covid-19 crisis, there has never been a better time to strengthen our global connections and look for ways to improve trade and learn about projects that will deliver a cleaner, greener shipping industry.

‘The G7 brings together the world’s leading economies and this year the UK government has extended the invitation to Australia, India, South Africa and South Korea. With the event taking place in the UK, we wanted to bring together the same countries and see how we, as leading and developing shipping nations, can better align trade regulations across the globe as well as co-ordinate green research and development projects.’

The event will start at 1300 BST and will begin by looking at advancements in digitising trade. The M7 members will encouraged to share their experience of national digital trade initiatives and thoughts about barriers for adoption.

The second part of the meeting will focus on green research and development projects and what initiatives the M7 members are participating in to improve decarbonisation across the shipping industry

M7 members will be encouraged to share experiences of coordinated research and development initiatives in their country and identify ways to better co-ordinate efforts in environmental R&D.
