Norwegian firm launching world first self-driving ferry

Norway’s biggest transportation enterprise, Torghatten AS, will soon launch the world’s first self-driving commercial passenger ferry, entirely powered by electricity. It will operate between the Stockholm islands of Kungsholmen and Södermalm in Sweden, commencing in June.

The idea of autonomous urban ferries was hatched at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim. Based on the researchers’ results, the company Zeabuz was founded, in which Torghatten AS is a co-owner.

Many large cities around the world have problems with congestion, lack of capacity and environmental and air pollution, notes Torghatten. Self-driving technology will be part of the solution, comments Reidun Svarva, chief business development officer at Torghatten.
