Algoma Central christens
new Canadian-flag carrier

At a special ceremony held in Port Colborne, Ontario, on August 25, Algoma Central Corporation christened the MV Algoma Mariner - the first completely new Canadian-flag dry-bulk carrier to be brought into service on the Great Lakes in over 25 years. Port Colborne resident Lisa Badaway was selected as the official sponsor of the vessel.

"With the introduction of the new MV Algobay last year, the MV Algoma Mariner and the soon to be constructed Equinox Class vessels, Algoma will own and operate the most modern and environmentally-efficient fleet in the entire Great Lakes system," commented Greg Wight, President and CEO of Algoma Central Corporation.

Montreal Port Authority
buys two more 'green' locomotives

The Montreal Port Authority announced it has signed an agreement with R.J. Corman Railpower to purchase two more multiple-generator (GenSet) locomotives. The initial unit was delivered to the MPA in October 2010.

These 2,000 HP locomotives make it possible to reduce diesel consumption thanks to a power-regulating device that can start up one, two or all three generators, depending on the size of the task at hand. And when the locomotive remains stationary for more than five minutes, the on-board computer puts it onto standby mode.

Seaway shipments surge 21% in July

Bolstered by a 21% increase in July, cargo shipments through the St. Lawrence Seaway have continued a steady climb, with total traffic to the end of July at 17 million tonnes up 7% from a year earlier.

The July total added up to 4.1 million tonnes, fuelled by big increases in Canadian grain, salt, petroleum products and other bulk materials used in construction projects.

The year-to-date iron ore shipments, totaling 4 million tonnes (down 23%) were the sole category to show a decline due to the closure of the US Steel plant in Hamilton.

The new company formed by the acquisition of Davie Shipyards by Upper Lakes Group has taken a crucial step in the process of obtaining a part of federal contracts to build 35 billion dollars worth of ships.

The federal government confirmed on July 27 that the demand to change the name of the tenderer submitted by the new company, Davie Canada, was accepted.

The National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy Secretariat (NSPS), responsible for reviewing all submissions, can now consider the submission of Davie Canada.
