Fednav wins prestigious
IBJ Bulk Ship Operator
of the Year award

The Fednav Group has been presented with the coveted Bulk Ship Operator of the Year award by the International Bulk Journal.

Before an international audience, Suzanne Bleau-Myrand, Fednav's Marketing Director, accepted the award at a gala dinner held in Hamburg on Nov. 19.

The award highlights Fednav's contribution to maritime trade as well as its leadership in the implementation of the highest operating standards - including efficiency, environmental protection and safety.

CSL's Trillium Class Baie St. Paul
wins Bulk Ship of Year award

The Baie St. Paul, the first of CSL's four new Trillium Class self-unloading Lakers, has captured the 2012 Bulk Ship of the Year award of the International Bulk Journal. It was presented at a gala dinner held on November 19 at Hamburg, Germany.

"It is with great pride that CSL accepts this award on behalf of the dedicated design and newbuild teams who, with their creativity, talent and dedication, helped deliver our exceptional vessel," said Louis Martel, President of Canada Steamship Lines.

Gaétan Boivin named chair
of AAPA Canadian delegation

Gaétan Boivin, President and CEO of the Trois-Rivières Port Authority, has been elected Chairman of the Canadian Delegation of the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA). The election was announced during the recent AAPA Annual Convention held in Mobile, Alabama.

"Canadian and U.S. ports face similar challenges both economically and environmentally, such as financing infrastructure, improving competitiveness and developing a city-port interface," said Mr. Boivin.

"This will be an opportunity to be part of various discussions but also achievable solutions while the Canadian port voice to the representations made by the organization along with ensuring the interests of Canadian port authorities are clearly understood by stakeholders in the maritime sector," Mr. Boivin said.

Established in 1912, the AAPA is a trade association representing more than 160 public port authorities in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean and Latin America.

Québec government approves sale of Davie shipyard to Zafiro Marine

The Québec government has approved the sale of the long-struggling Davie shipyard in Lévis to Monaco-based Zafiro Marine, which manages and operates a fleet of specialized offshore vessels engaged in the oil, gas and renewable energy markets. The transaction with Ontario's Upper Lakes Group for an undisclosed amount is expected to close in about two weeks.

The sale was confirmed by Premier Pauline Marois on Nov. 1 during  an interview with Radio-Canada.

Fednav orders new ice-breaking        bulk carrier

Fednav and Canadian Royalties have announced the signing of a long-term contract which provides for the transportation of nickel and copper concentrates from Canadian Royalties' Nunavik Nickel Project in northern Québec to customers in Europe as well as the import from Europe of mine supplies and equipment.

Speaking on Oct. 29 at the 5th Annual Arctic Shipping North America Conference, Thomas Paterson, a Senior Vice President of Fednav Limited, announced the placing of an order with Sumitomo Corporation and Universal Shipbuilding Corporation, Japan, for the design and construction of an ice-breaking bulk carrier with a design deadweight of 25,000 tonnes. It will service the transportation contract referred to above.
