Montreal port employers and longshore union sign accord

The Maritime Employers Association and Local 375 CUPE Longshoremen have signed a Memorandum of Agreement ,thus allowing the Port of Montreal to carry on its operations while remaining competitive and ensuring its growth, the MEA announced. It was signed on Jan. 4.

The proposed collective agreement, which will be submitted to Local 375 union members in the coming days, is for a 6 year-period. It must first be discussed then ratified by its members before being made official. Both parties have agreed to not disclose any detail on various clauses prior to the union's meeting.

Port of Quebec shatters           records in 2012

The Port of Quebec consolidated its position as the biggest port on the St. Lawrence River in tonnage terms for the second year in a row after handling a record 32.5 million tonnes of cargo in 2012. Last year also marked a record performance in cruise business.

"More than ever, the Port of Quebec is a strategic gateway of continental trade," commented Mario Girard, President and CEO of the Quebec Port Authority when announcing the traffic results on January 8.

The cargo total dominated by bulk commodities represented a 12.5% increase over the previous record set in 2011.

Wagenborg vessel first of 2013 at Trois-Rivières

The Dutch-flag MV Atlanticborg owned by Wagenborg Shipping was the first ship to arrive at the Port of Trois-Rivières on the St. Lawrence River in the New Year.

It arrived on January 2 with a cargo of 6,004 tonnes  of petroleum coke from Lake Charles, Louisiana destined for the Alcoa-Deschambault aluminum factory in the region.

Gaetan Boivin, President and CEO of the Trois-Rivières Port Authority, presented the ship captain, Yevgen Novytsky, with the reproduction of a painting by local artist Pierre Labrecque.

Port of Montreal posts strong 2012 performance

The Port of Montreal came very close in 2012 to matching its record cargo throughput of 2011 despite the economic slowdown in many western countries and weaker global trends. Preliminary statistics disclosed on January 3 put total 2012 traffic at an estimated 28.4 million tonnes versus 28.5 million tonnes in 2011. This represented a decline of just 0.2%.

"Under the circumstances, we can certainly say that we performed quite well," said Sylvie Vachon, President and CEO of the Montreal Port Authority on the occasion of the awarding of the Gold-Headed Cane to Capt. Deepinder Hingh, master of Hapag-Lloyd's containership Mississauga Express, the first ocean vessel to enter the port at the start of the New Year.
