Two floating cranes supporting Vancouver recovery operation
Two large floating cranes have been urgently dispatched to the Vanterm container terminal in the Port of Vancouver to support recovery operations where a gantry crane collapsed after being struck by a container vessel early Monday. Louanne Wong, spokesperson for Global Container Terminals, said the Ever Summit, a 7,000 TEU containership from the fleet of Taiwan's Evergreen Marine, truck the gantry crane while berthing, resulting in a shutdown until further notice of shipping activity at this terminal.
The boom of the crane is draped across the ship and a number of damaged containers. Ms. Wong said none of the damaged containers contain hazardous cargo. Two tugs are holding the vessel against the dock to make sure it does not shift.
The Transportation Safety Board is investigating the incident.
