Limited fuel spill from containership in Vancouver harbour

The Canadian Coast Guard was busy over the weekend dealing with a fuel spill from the 8,500 TEU containership, the MV Europe, in Vancouver’s English Bay.  After being informed of the incident on Saturday morning, the Canadian Coast Guard rapidly deployed a boom which limited the spread of a spill estimated at between 60 and 100 litres.

A spokesperson for the Coast Guard said on Sunday morning: “We anticipate the fuel has thinned and spread out overnight and we are working today to aggressively contain the slick and remove as much as possible from the marine environment.”

The Coast Guard also indicated that the Cyprus-registered  ship had released no further fuel. “We believe the situation will remain stable,” said the Coast Guard spokesperson.

Danaos, the ship’s owner based in Greece, contracted the Western Canada Marine Response Corporation (WCMRC) to respond to the incident, under the leadership of the Coast Guard.

Built in 2004, the MV Europe had left the Port of Prince Rupert on Jan. 13 and arrived in Vancouver on Jan. 15.
