World’s biggest container port adds 2.6 million TEUs capacity

The Port of Shanghai, which handled more than 49 million TEUs in 2023, this week opened the first phase of a new terminal that will boost capacity by 2.6 million TEUs.

The new container terminal area at the world’s largest port is at Luojing Port located to the north of the city centre on the south bank of the Yangtze River. It is adjacent to existing terminals in Waigaoqiao and Yangshan.

The area in question is a redeveloped bulk terminal formerly used by local steel mills. Phase one of the automated terminal features five berths, and further phases are slated to give Luojing a total capacity of 6 million TEUs.

In recent years, Shanghai has forged a commanding 10 million TEUs lead over its nearest boxport rival , Singapore, in the world rankings of the top 30 container ports, according to Alphaliner.
