The Canadian Coast Guard has released a new photo of the Thamesborg, the Dutch-flagged freighter which ran aground in the Franklin Strait of the Northwest Passage last weekend. Operated by the Wagenborg shipping line, the vessel was carrying carbon blocks from China to the Port of Baie Comeau on the St. Lawrence River.
The Canadian Coast Guard received notification of the incident on Sept. 6. There was no injuries or pollution. None of the 16 crew members were injured.
The CCGS Sir Wilfrid Laurier went on the scene with its Fast Rescue Craft and helicopter. And the CCGS Jean Goodwill completed a hull inspection on Monday, using a remotely operated vehicle. The results are currently being analyzed.
“The vessel MV Thamesborg has flooded in multiple ballast tanks.” the CCG reported in its latest update. “There is no flooding in any of its fuel tanks or its cargo hold.
“A first thorough assessment conducted by the crew of Thamesborg has shown damage to the hull and ballast tanks of the ship which is stable and aground,” Wagenborg said in a statement.
The company indicated it was still unknown how the ship ran aground and it will do an investigation.
