The Suez Canal today reported a record for the number of transits through the international waterway, with 107 vessels passing through in either direction. This represented a 15% increase from a month ago.
The Suez Canal Authority was 7.3 million tons transited the canal, with 56 southbound vessels carrying 7.3 million tons and 51 northbound vessels with 2.9 million tons.
Chairman, Admiral Ossama Rabiee commented that the new volumes would not have been possible without the New Suez Canal project. The project has expanded the waterway – adding a new channel in the southern sections as well as improving some of the navigational issues in the area.
In addition to the new channel and enhancement to navigation in the canal, the project calls for the introduction of additional support vessels.
The transits came from a diverse group of tankers, bulk carriers, car carriers and containerships. The southbound convoy was headed by the Evergreen shipping line’s Ever Gifted with a carrying capacity of 20,124 TEU (per photo).
