Quebec’s maritime workforce: a current picture

 

– The Comité sectoriel de main-d’oeuvre de l’industrie maritime (CSMOIM) has just released the latest version of its Diagnostic sectoriel de main-d’oeuvre. This study, conducted every three (3) to five (5) years in order to have up-to-date data on the maritime sector, tells us that 15,228 direct jobs and approximately 8,200 indirect jobs are created by the Quebec marine industry to date.

The DDM Group’s Sectoral Labour Diagnosis provides a quantitative and qualitative portrait of the labour and training challenges faced by companies, in addition to compiling up-to-date statistics specific to the sector. It also offers insights and recommendations to aid businesses In the 2023 version of the Diagnostic, we learn that the marine workforce is made up of 5,510 seafarers and 9,718 land workers spread across the province.

In terms of labour issues faced by businesses, the attraction of the workforce, skills development and workforce retention are among the most important issues for Quebec maritime employers. Welcoming and integrating new employees as well as the ability to attract a diverse workforce are also issues raised by organizations.

The most difficult positions to fill are electricians/electromechanics and mechanical officers (1,2, 3 or 4th class) navigating posts, as well as superintendents and information technology personnel for land posts.
