Montreal dockers present offer to port employers

The union representing 1,125 dockers today (April 1) presented what was described as “a global offer” to the Maritime Employers Association to renew a collective agreement that expired on December 31, 2018. No details were immediately disclosed.

In a message released on Facebook, Martin Lapierre, president of CUPE 375, said the union’s negotiating committee tabled “a global offer to the Employer in the presence of mediators.”

“Negotiations will pursue between the parties next Tuesday, April 6, 2021,” he said.

Work schedule issues have dominated the prolonged negotiations that have spread anxiety amongst shippers, some of whom have been diverting cargo from Canada’s second biggest port after Vancouver.

The union offer is understood to be in response to the latest MEA package that was overwhelmingly rejected by the union membership on March 21, the last day of a seven-month armistice between the two sides in a bitter conflict marred last summer by a series of work stoppages.
