First direct ocean freight to Port of Montreal from Vietnam

In the wake of the newly signed partnership agreement between the Montreal Port Authority and Vietnam Maritime Administration, the Port of Montreal recently welcomed its first direct ocean freight from Vietnam.

On August 25, the Azoresborg docked at the Port of Montreal’s Viau Terminal from the Port of Haiphong, carrying 198 containers of high-value energy storage units. On arrival, the vessel was unloaded by Termont. The logistics, transshipment and warehousing were handled by Proactive Supply Chain Group Inc., a major player in shipping logistics in Greater Montreal’s port ecosystem, due to its proximity to the latter.

Transporting goods directly between Vietnam and the Port of Montreal pays off in many ways, not only in terms of costs for carriers and delivery times, but also in terms of risk reduction and efficiency gains for shipping lines.

This maiden voyage attests to the growing strength of trade relations between the Port of Montreal and Vietnam. In 2023, the Port of Montreal initiated business development initiatives between both port authorities. On August 9, these efforts culminated on August 9 with the signing of an action plan that focuses on energy transition, green corridors and maritime digital innovation. Asia now accounts for 27% of volumes at the Port of Montreal, positioning itself as a constantly evolving market that shows no signs of losing steam.

“This first direct trip from Vietnam marks a significant step in strengthening our trade relations and symbolizes the Port of Montreal’s commitment to diversify and optimize our international trade. We are proud to expedite these exchanges, which reflect not only our logistical capacity but also our commitment to sustainable and innovative practices,” said Paul Bird, Chief Commercial Officer.

“As a container terminal operator at the Port of Montreal, Termont is extremely proud to have been the chosen partner for the unloading and handling of the Azoresborg’s containers. Our close collaboration with partners in the maritime logistics chain demonstrates that it is possible to achieve sustainable and innovative projects by mobilizing our resources, experience and expertise,” said Julien Dubreuil, General Manager of Termont Montréal Inc.
