Containers from MV Zim Kingston found ashore on Vancouver Island

The Canadian Coast Guard reported today that four containers from the stricken MV Zim Kingston that last week lost more than 100 units have been found ashore on the north end of Vancouver Island. One of the Coast Guard helicopters spotted the containers near Cape Scott.

“Unified command has provided this information to the ship’s owner who has hired a contractor to recover the containers that went overboard,” the CCG said in a Facebook post.

The containership was heading to Vancouver from South Korea when the incident happed during rough seas on October 22. It subsequently anchored at Constance Bank, near Victoria, where damaged containers with hazardous material caught fire. Some containers have continued to burn since Saturday.

All crew on the ship have been safely rescued.

“Originally, there were close to 2,000 (containers) on board the Zim Kingston, with a thousand of those being on the upper deck,” explained Mariah McCooey, deputy federal incident commander, earlier this week. She added that some containers may have sunk. (Photo Canadian Coast Guard)
