Canadian government agency awarded $9M contract to supply marine location markers to U.S. Navy

Ottawa – CCC (Canadian Commercial Corporation), Canada’s government-to-government contracting agency, announced today that it has been awarded a $9-million contract by the United States Department of Defense (U.S. DoD) for Mk 25 Mod 5 Marine Location Markers manufactured by Ontario-based HFI Pyrotechnics Inc (HFI).

The water-activated devices are used to create a visible smoke and flame signal for locating objects or people in the water during search and rescue, or anti-submarine warfare missions.

The Mk 25 Mod 5 Marine Location Marker is widely used by the U.S. and allied navies. It can be deployed from aircraft or ships and activates upon contact with seawater, emitting a bright yellow flame and white smoke for up to 20 minutes. This visual signal helps crews identify precise locations in open water under various conditions.

HFI, based in Prescott, Ontario, is a global leader in specialty pyrotechnics for defense and security applications. With roots dating back to 1873, HFI designs and manufactures a range of defence pyrotechnics for smoke, sound and light applications – including the Mk 25 Mod 5 Marine Location Marker. Their ISO-certified facilities ensure reliable, safe, and high-performance solutions for mission-critical operations.

Through CCC’s contract, HFI will supply its advanced markers to the U.S. Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division (NSWC Crane). Located in Indiana, NSWC Crane specializes in electronic warfare, strategic missions, and expeditionary warfare. It operates on one of the largest naval installations globally and supports over 3,000 personnel. NSWC Crane manages an annual budget exceeding $1.6 billion USD to advance defense technologies and support naval forces.

As Canada’s foreign military sales agency, CCC is funded by the Government of Canada to enable companies like HFI to deliver made-in-Canada solutions to the U.S. Navy and other entities of U.S. DoD.

Through CCC’s free U.S. DoD Prime Contractor service, Canadian businesses can access the expertise and support they need to succeed in the complex U.S. DoD procurement market. To learn more, contact the CCC team.
