CN signal and communications workers launch strike

Some 750 Canadian National Railway Co. signal and communications workers began a strike on Saturday after negotiations failed to reach an agreement over benefits and wages, according to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

The union had given a 72-hour strike notice on June 15.

“CN has implemented its operational contingency plan,” said CN spokesman Jonathan Abecassis, adding: “Rail operations continue safely and at normal levels.”

It remains to be seen whether the strike affecting a small number of CN workers will worsen logistical bottlenecks that have occurred as a result of the COVID 19 pandemic. (Photo CN)
