PSA International acquiring Halterm in Halifax

2019-05-07

Singapore-based global terminal operator PSA International will reportedly take over control of Halterm Container Terminal in Halifax from current owner, Australia's Macquarie Infrastructure and Real Assets, for an undisclosed sum.

According to a report published on JOC.com, PSA beat out a joint bid by Canadian National Railway and CMA CGM, Logistec Corporation of Montreal, and other bidding interests. There were no press statements immediately available from PSA, Halterm or Macquarie.

However, the JOC cited a PSA spokesperson confirming by email the purchase agreement that will give PSA a presence on North America's East Coast.

At the same time, PSA has acquired Penn Terminals, a multi-purpose terminal in Pennsylvania from Macquarie. Both purchases will require regulatory approvals in the US and Canada.

Container traffic at the two terminals in Halifax has been rebounding in the past few years - attaining 550,000 TEUs - thanks to new services notably with Asia and larger ships of more than 10,000 TEU calling at the Nova Scotia port, where CN offers the sole rail connection with Montreal, Toronto and the US Midwest. A planned temporary expansion of Halterm will increase berth lnegth to handle two large containerships simultaneously. (Photo HPA)
